Making a Reusable Wrap Pouch

One of my FAVOURITE ways to use beeswax wraps is to make them into baggies or "pouches". They work so well for storing food because they guarantee a good seal, which is VERY important when using beeswax wraps.Today, I want to talk about a particularly difficult vegetable to keep in your fridge for long, that keeps well in these pouches....mushrooms!

Mushrooms are extremely hard to keep fresh for a long time in your fridge. I'm sure we have all come across the situation of pulling out your bag or carton of mushrooms to find they have turned slimy! Mushrooms have a high water content and so if they are unable to breathe they result in a slimy texture.

The #1 most important tip for storing mushrooms is they NEED TO BREATHE. If you store them in plastic they will go slimy extremely quickly. Try to buy in a paper bag when possible (another tip for reducing single use plastic), and if you leave in their paper bag make sure you leave the bag open so they can breathe.

I love wrapping my mushrooms in beeswax reusable food wraps because the beeswax naturally allows them to breathe, while keeping out any moisture from the fridge. The key to this is making sure your pouch has a TIGHT seal, and the mushrooms are packed LOOSELY in the beeswax wrap. Here are the steps I use to make a reusable food wrap pouch for my mushrooms and watch the video below:

1. Lie your reusable wrap flat on the table, then fold up one end about three quarters of the way.

2. Roll each edge twice and press

3. Fill baggy with mushrooms (or any snack or other veggies you want)

4. Fold top over and press edges to seal!
